There's Magic Everywhere

It's impossible not to love Lake Hawea. Its jaw-dropping vista stretches endlessly as you begin your drive from Wanaka to the West Coast. Glacier carved, it sits, surrounded by rugged mountains, alongside equally sublime Lake Wanaka. This view is my place of "quietude". I rarely meet anyone besides a friendly local. The heavens conjured up something special on my birthday.

Chasing Dreams

I'm addicted to this viewpoint. When I visit Tekapo I'll climb Mt John at sunrise and sunset and then do the 3 hour loop track to the summit for my midday coffee. Pitch black, gale winds, snow - it's not going to stop me. I hope this image shows you why.

For the non-believers

Worshipped by photographers and a drawcard for tourists across the globe , the Church of the Good Shepherd sits on the sublime Tekapo lakeshore. It's a location where the heavens sure know how to put on a show.

Nature's paintbrush

This viewpoint over Lake Alexandrina and Lake Tekapo is from the summit of Mt John, the home of Earth & Sky observatory. Tekapo is an international Dark Sky reserve so you can drive up, chill out and take in the awe-inspiring 360 degree views from Astro Cafe only during the daytime. Regardless of the time of the day, I prefer not to drive but go via the steep walking track that ascends 330 metres through a gorgeous and sheltered exotic larch forest. Just a caution, if it's windy at the lakeshore be prepared to get blown off your feet on the summit.

Shadowland

At Milford Sound dramatic cliffs adorned with lush rainforest and waterfalls tower out of crystal clear water into the sky. This evocative landscape which was carved many thousands of years ago by glaciers will leave you breathless. Sitting at the head of the fiord, Mitre Peak steals an already unforgettable show, rising more than a kilometre straight out of the sea.

Prelude

As the land remains in darkness a glimmer of light appears behind the mountains. It's the first sign that the sky is going to ignite with colour.
