There's one way to avoid the hundreds of tourists that mill around the Church of the Good Shepherd at Lake Tekapo - climb 330 metres up a mountain through a pitch black forest at 5.30am to greet a storm. As the wind and rain are lashing across my face, I feel like I'm going to be blown off the mountain . Most of the time I'm in damage control because it's too wild to get my camera out of my bag. Yep, I can be pretty sure none of those tourists are going to walk into my shot just as the light is perfect.

Spellbound
The view from Mt John of Lake Tekapo. It draws me in; it pulls me back again and again. And when the norwest winds conspire to turn the sky a fiery red, the spell is complete. The one hour ascent in darkness is but a distant memory.

From mountains to sea
There's a battle for the title of my favourite beach but I think Gillepsies is winning the race. The sheer beauty of the Southern Alps rising behind it has given it the edge. The others Bruce Bay, Motukiekie and Wharariki likewise hail from the West Coast - also powerful, untamed and with a strong sense of solitude.
